Avascular Necrosis

Avascular Necrosis (AVN), also known as osteonecrosis, is a condition that occurs when there is a loss of blood supply to a bone, leading to bone tissue death. This can result in joint pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion as the affected bone collapses over time. AVN commonly impacts the hip joint but can also affect other joints like the knee or shoulder.

Stages of Avascular Necrosis

Enamel caries

Dentin caries

Pulpitis

Periodontitis

Symptoms of Dental Infections:

  • Tooth Pain:
Sharp, throbbing pain that may intensify while chewing or touching the affected area.
  • Swelling:
Swelling around the tooth, jaw, or face.
  • Pus Drainage:
Pus may drain from the abscess, leading to a bad taste in the mouth.
  • Sensitivity to Hot, Cold, or Sweet Foods/Drinks:
The affected tooth may become sensitive to temperature changes.
  • Redness or Warmth:
Redness or warmth around the infected tooth or gum area.
  • Visible Damage to Tooth:
Holes, cracks, or damage may be visible on the affected tooth.
  • Fever:
Mild fever as the body attempts to fight the infection.

Causes of Dental Infections:

  • Tooth Decay (Cavities):
Bacteria from cavities enter the inner parts of the tooth, causing infection.
  • Gum Disease:
Infections like gingivitis or periodontitis can damage the gum and lead to abscess formation.
  • Dental Procedures:
Inadequate care during dental procedures (such as fillings, crowns, or root canals) can introduce bacteria into the tooth.
  • Poor Oral Hygiene:
Infrequent brushing or flossing allows bacteria to grow, leading to infections.
  • Weakened Immune System:
Conditions like diabetes or cancer can make a person more susceptible to infections.

Limitations of Medication Therapy

  • Antibiotic Resistance:
Overuse or misuse of antibiotics can lead to bacterial resistance, making infections harder to treat.
  • Root Canal Treatment Failures:
Root canal treatments may fail if the infection is deep or the root system is too complex to clean thoroughly.
  • Abscess Drainage Procedures:
Surgical drainage of an abscess can lead to complications such as bleeding, nerve damage, or further infection.
  • Gum Disease Treatments:
Treatments like scaling and root planing can stop gum disease progression but do not reverse the damage already caused to the gums or bone.
