Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects motor control. It is caused by the degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain, which leads to hallmark symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability. The disease also impacts non-motor functions, leading to cognitive decline, mood disorders, and autonomic dysfunction. Parkinson’s can take years or even decades to develop visible motor symptoms.

Stages of Parkinson’s Disease

Causes of Parkinson’s Disease

  • Genetic Factors: Family history and gene mutations.
  • Environmental Toxins: Exposure to pesticides and herbicides.
  • Head Trauma: Repeated head injuries or concussions.
  • Low Estrogen: Especially post-menopause in women.

Limitations of Medication Therapy

  • Levodopa:
Long-term use can cause motor fluctuations, such as “wearing off” and dyskinesias (involuntary movements).
Effectiveness decreases as the disease progresses.
  • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS):
Effective in managing motor symptoms but not non-motor symptoms (e.g., cognitive decline, depression).
    Carries surgical risks.
  • Dopamine Agonists:
Can cause side effects such as hallucinations, sleep disturbances, and impulse control disorders.
    Affects quality of life.
  • Physical Therapy:
Improves mobility and balance but does not halt disease progression.
Can be challenging for patients with advanced Parkinson’s.
